The African savanna is a rolling grassland dotted with trees that covers nearly half the continent and is home to almost 2 million large animals, including lions, elephants, rhinoceros and zebras. The savanna covers about 5 million square miles and comprises 27 countries. Many of these countries are developing nations and some are plagued with civil strife. Because of this, traveling in the African savanna, if nothing else, is always an adventure.
